Call of Duty: Vanguard Reportedly Has Series Worst UK Launch in 14 Years – Push Square

While Call of Duty: Vanguard enjoyed the UK’s second-biggest game launch of 2021 earlier in the month, only second to FIFA 22, the latest entry is reportedly off to the worst start sales-wise for 14 years. 2007’s revolutionary game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on PlayStation 3 is the only one to sell fewer units during its launch week according to Video Games Chronicle. “Only the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – the game that kicked off the modern era of CoD in 2007 – sold fewer copies during its opening week, sales data seen by VGC suggests.”

The current launch sales record is still held by 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Vanguard sold almost 200 per cent fewer copies in the same time frame. Call of Duty: Ghosts sold 52 per cent more copies than this year’s instalment, and even Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has it beat by another 16 per cent.

It’s hardly a surprise to see Call of Duty: Vanguard doing so poorly when compared to previous titles as interest in the title’s return to World War II seems to be at an all-time low. There’s also the Warzone factor, which is still an incredibly popular free-to-play game. The lawsuit filed earlier this year against Activision Blizzard concerning workplace harassment may have also turned buyers away.

We actually happen to think Vanguard is an improvement, however, beating out last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. We called it a “Call of Duty game doing Call of Duty things. Whether that’s of any interest or not, you likely already know.” This new sales data suggests more aren’t interested than usual. Did you decide to skip Call of Duty: Vanguard?
